Five Stages That Could Decide the 2026 Vuelta a España

17 August 2026

Twenty-one stages separate the peloton from Monaco and Granada, but five days stand out as potential turning points in the battle for the 2026 Vuelta a España.

Stage 4 -- Andorra la Vella to Andorra la Vella (104.8 km, Mountain)

Only four days into the race, the general-classification contenders will already face a genuine mountain stage. At just 104.8 kilometres, Stage 4 is short enough to encourage aggressive racing and arrives immediately after a medium-mountain finish at Font Romeu. Nobody is likely to win La Vuelta here. But somebody could lose it.

Stage 9 -- Villajoyosa to Alto de Aitana (187.4 km, Mountain)

The final stage before the first rest day finishes at Alto de Aitana. After eight days of racing and several earlier climbing tests, Stage 9 should provide a much clearer picture of the real hierarchy among the GC contenders. It is also exactly the type of stage where a strong team can begin isolating rival leaders before the final climb.

Stage 14 -- Jaén to Sierra de La Pandera (154.5 km, Mountain)

La Pandera provides another major summit test late in the second week. By this point, accumulated fatigue becomes increasingly important. Riders who could follow the strongest accelerations in Andorra may find the same effort considerably harder after two weeks of racing. Stage 14 therefore has the potential to produce bigger gaps than its distance alone suggests.

Stage 18 -- El Puerto de Santa María to Jerez de la Frontera (32 km, Individual time trial)

This could be the stage that changes the entire final weekend. Thirty-two kilometres against the clock is enough for a strong time triallist to take significant time from a pure climber. For Pogačar and other riders capable of combining elite climbing with time-trial performance, it represents an opportunity. For their rivals, it creates urgency -- anyone expecting to lose time in Jerez may need to attack before Stage 18 rather than waiting for the final mountains.

Stage 20 -- La Calahorra to Collado del Alguacil (186.8 km, Mountain)

The final mountain stage. The final chance. After almost three weeks and more than 3,000 kilometres of racing, Stage 20 offers the last meaningful opportunity to overturn the general classification before the final stage into Granada. If the gaps are small, tactics could become unusually aggressive. If one rider already has a comfortable lead, it may instead become a final demonstration of control. Either way, Collado del Alguacil should provide the final verdict on who arrives in Granada wearing red.
